Communicating with your web designer can be hard at the best of times. They are usually very good at what they are doing but getting your design ideas relayed to them is not always easy because typically web designers aren’t good communicators. Here are some good tips getting your site to look the way you want:

  1. KISS. It’s and old saying, keep it simple student but it is very effective in this case. Web designers are very good at taking the detail to the enth degree, and in some cases starting with too much detail can end up making your site way to cluttered and also very different to what you want.
  2. DRAW. Alot of people probably aren’t all that visual but if it doesn’t look good on paper it’s probably not going to look good on a site either. I suggest that you draw some layout ideas on paper, scan them and email them to your designer. Most good web designers will appreciate this as it gives them a good grounding to work from.
  3. BE CLEAR. This may sound obvious but in alot of cases a client doesn’t really have a clear picture of what they want and when they get a mockup design of the site done, they are disappointed that it doesn’t look like what they had in mind. Your web designer isn’t a mind reader (although if he/she was this would save alot of hassles ;) ). Look for different site examples and borrow ideas. Once your layout is pretty clear in your mind, draw it or email the sites to your designer. They can take it from there.
  4. HAVE WORKABLE TIMELINES. If you want a basic 5-8 page site built and the mockup has been approved by you, your designer may only take a couple of hours to complete this task but if you plugins for ecommerce, membership databases or custom work that needs done it will take time. Your designer should be able to give you a clear picture before they commence work on the timeline.
  5. TAKE CHARGE. Remember who your designer works for, you need to let them know if you don’t like a mockup design. Their role is to build what you want or tell you that what you want isn’t buildable. Many customers see their mockup and settle for second best only to be disappointed in 3-6 months time when there are limitations or the design is outdated.
  6. DO NOT PAY THEM IN TOTAL UP FRONT. The industry standard is to pay a deposit but you also want to hold back a generous portion of the fee until it is delivered upon and you are happy. If you pay them up front you run the risk of them wanting to finish the job as soon as possible to maximise their profit margins.

You may even follow all of these steps and still have a site that you are not happy with. The main cause for this is that you have the wrong designer or an inexperienced graduate. Ask to see their previous work. Remember, you don’t want to just be a resume builder. If they don’t have the talent does it matter how cheap they are. In the end you will end up paying anyway for a redevelopment.

The gaming world is probably the most competitive niche in SEO – esp poker and casinos.

There is no secret sauce as there used to be e.g. with old link networks being burned.  Rob shows a graph of search volume and est clickthrough

888 vs William Hill – #1 and #4 respectively. Both are fairly similar in optimisation terms, but what separates them is their backlinks.  Rob uses a similar process to Dave Naylor to rank links according to anchor text, class C IPs and other metrics like PR.

Once you’ve dominated a market – eg casino in UK, what about branching out to other countries -eg France. Use backlink comparisons to check out a few of the top ranked sites in France.  Main conclusion is use a subfolder NOT a subdomain – with a subdomain your authority is starting from scratch. Within Google Webmaster Tools you can register a subfolder to a separate country.  Rob expanded on this more in the Q&A – it is much easier, quicker and cheaper to use a subfolder on a generic TLD to rank for really competitive keyphrases in different countries, compared with building up authority from scratch on different (sub)domains.

My summary:

This was an excellent session as expected with such top class speakers, all so experienced that if you let them talk for any amount of time there’s going to be valuable stuff for anybody who is into Search Engine Optimisation to soak up.  The problem is (and I’ve heard this said about the big SEO conferences compared to say the SEOmoz Pro seminar last year) is that all the talks are so short that speakers cram a shedload of good stuff into a verbal diahorrea of bullet points. It’s so easy to get lost with all this information and for it to go in one ear and out the other! Needless to say I’ll be checking out the slides when they’re released and chatting to the speakers in the pub if possible!

I’m not sure what the next big conference will be about, hopefully they will have one dedicated solely to Web Design in the not too distant future.

Watch out for duplicate content issues – e.g. is a search result page pointing to the same content as a static page.

Where there maybe blank pages showing up, it would be great to create a script to find these and straight away send off an alert email to the team asking them to create content for this blank page.  I like this idea.
Use JS/CSS # solution for paginated pages – all pages are loaded as one page, avoids duplicate content cannibalisation for page 2,3,4 etc.

Make sure you use microformats on vacancy pages and ensure your listings stand out, specifically aimed at rucruitment is H-Resume microformat which is currently in beta.

David starts with the importance of understanding your visitors when planning your ecommerce navigation structure – most of the time users don’t want to be funnelled, they want to get straight to the product they’re looking for.The classic model of a complicated tree structure with categories and 4-5 branches before you even get to the product you are after is not the best way to do this. To SEO this kind of structure you need to spend a lot of time injecting unique content onto each of these pages – a big time drain.  This also creates a “content vacuum” where you have pages that just have links to other pages.  These are low value pages to search engines, especially because Google will track individual bounce rates (not sure if he via Google Analytics here).  These funnelling pages also don’t allow much cross-selling – high dropout rate, even up to 90%, and in the worst cases people start using internal Search instead – one step away from going elsewhere.

Instead – give visitors immediate access to exactly where they want to go – e.g. mega menus with loads of categories in the dropdown – sites like diy.com (B&Q) have switched to this.  This gives you content heavy categories as standard and better opportunities for cross selling, but still options for refinements.Therefore the bottom line equates to less clicks equals less abandoment.

Here is today’s lifesaving advice: Every page on a web site is a landing page.

You see, I believed that every visitor to my websites would come first to my home page. They would all happily consume the valuable content there and progress through my site in an orderly fashion, like third graders in line on their way to gym class.

If I had been intelligent enough to engage a professional to explain to me how my prospective customers would actually discover my site and navigate around it, my sites would have been designed very differently. I needed to either contract with an outside expert, take much more time to learn before acting or used an online marketer to professionally build a business website for me–one that actually had a chance of meeting my goals.

That simply means that your visitors will use your home page more than it might merit, although I took a circuitous route to get to that conclusion.  As long as your prospects are loitering there, you better make sure you help them make good use of their time.

That brings us to our central question, which is what are the purposes of a well constructed home page in a properly designed Internet business site?  Consider what follows to be a menu from which you may choose, ala carte:

*  Serve as the foyer for your international corporate office and reflect the corporate climate, whether that is formal and efficient or relaxed and friendly.

*  Provide directional signs to all of the locations that your most prized customers are likely to want to visit.  Of course, your navigation menu will provide this service on all of your site’s pages, but, since this is often the first visit by many of your guests, the home page is an opportunity to help them understand the road maps that you will regularly provide.

*  Assure that the business’s mission is clearly communicated.

*  Tell your visitors what you want them to do.  You might want them to buy a product, sign up to receive valuable information, learn about the topic in which your business is the expert or even all of those.
